Today (Apr. 23) is World Book Day, otherwise known as the International Day of the Book, a worldwide celebration of reading that dates back to 1995. Did you know that Chicago was once home to the largest privately owned bookstore chain in the entire country? The chain enjoyed a 41-year run in Chicago, from 1954 through 1995. During their glory days, they had 22 locations in the area, including a famous flagship store at 29 South Wabash downtown. The ‘90s brought intense competition from Crown Books, Borders, Barnes & Noble, leading to its eventual bankruptcy. Their remaining locations closed for good during the summer of 1995. What was the name of this renowned bookstore chain? Send us your answer on the Contact page by April 27. First correct response will receive a coupon for one FREE book at the Used Book Sale this August!
